Allergy Summer Travel
July 11, 2022
Happy July!
Summer is now in full swing, and people are taking trips and going on vacations. Chicago Allergy & Asthma wants to offer some travel tips for healthy and safe travels and trips. Be sure to pack medications, a first-aid kit, allergy-friendly snacks, and travel entertainment for kids as well as adults. Refill your prescription medications and pick up over-the-counter medicines. Create lists of your current medical conditions, medications, prescribing physicians, and dosages.
Medication/first-aid kit that includes:
- Pack daily medications for everyone in the family, enough for the length of your trip, with a few “emergency spares”
- Any rescue medication(s) such as Inhalers and EpiPens
- Over-the-counter prevention and treatment
- Sunscreen, insect repellant, antihistamines, anti-diarrhea medicine, antacid, motion sickness medicine, expectorant, pain and fever medicine, mild laxative, mild sleep aid
- First-aid kit should include
- Hydrocortisone cream, antibacterial ointment, antiseptic wound cleaner, sunburn gel/cream, insect bite/anti-itch cream, bandages, tweezers, eye drops/rinse, alcohol wipes, small scissors
Other Tips:
- Consider ordering and wearing a medical identification bracelet if you have asthma or severe allergies
- Plan ahead for allergy-friendly snacks, family favorite snacks, and travel cold pack/cooler. Things like applesauce pouches, string cheese, veggie sticks, gluten-free crackers, and trail mix travel well
- Look up smart packing hacks
- Don’t forget to read labels for on-the-road food purchases and ask about ingredients in restaurants. Food allergens can sneak in and cause problems on vacation
- Check the weather and pollen forecast for your destination
- Be sure to have your health insurance card with you
- Stay hydrated and drink plenty of fluids
Have a safe, healthy, and happy July. Book your appointments now for back-to-school check-ups.
